Nephrolithiasis Associated Rare Renal Tumors Masquerading Non-Functional Kidney

چکیده
Nephrolithiasis is a common entity encountered in general population. Nephrolithiasis refers to formation and impaction of stones in renal pelvis and calyces. Long standing stones cause irritation, chronic inflammation and may cause ‘metaplasia’ of lining epithelium. The metaplasia is commonly of squamous and glandular epithelium. Metaplastic epithelium may further undergo dysplasia and result in squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma respectively, both of which are very rare tumors of kidney. Tumors of the renal pelvis are uncommon, with relative frequency of transitional cell carcinoma (90%), squamous cell carcinoma (10%) and adenocarcinoma (1%) [1]. Hereby, we report two cases of primary squamous cell carcinoma of renal parenchyma and adenocarcinoma of renal pelvis. Both the cases are associated with nephrolithiasis, making chronic irritation the most probable cause of metaplasia and malignant transformation. The emphasis in this case report is careful examination of all cases of nephrolitiasis clinically, radiologically and histopathologically to look for any foci of malignancy because majority of them may be occult.

Laparoscopic nephrectomy for giant staghorn calculus with non-functioning kidneys: Is associated unsuspected urothelial carcinoma responsible for conversion? Report of 2 cases
BACKGROUND Neglected renal stones remain a major cause of morbidity in developing countries. They not only result in functional impairment of affected kidney, but also act as an important predisposing factor for development of urothelial neoplasms. It is not uncommon to miss an associated urothelial tumor in a patient of nephrolithiasis preoperatively. CASE PRESENTATION In last 3 years, we ca...
متن کاملThe Forgotten Complication of Recurrent Nephrolithiasis: “Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Renal Pelvis”—A Case and Review of the Literature
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the renal pelvis is an aggressive tumor with insidious onset of unspecific symptoms and advanced stages at diagnosis. It is a rare entity, accounting for 0.5-8% of renal tumors. In this paper, we describe the case of a patient with a history of recurrent nephrolithiasis that presented with an aggressive form of SCC of the renal pelvis with rapid relapse after re...
متن کاملSome Renal Masses Did Not “Read the Book”: A Case of a High Grade Hybrid Renal Tumor Masquerading as a Renal Cyst on Non-contrast Imaging
Hybrid renal tumors (HRT) are rare neoplasms that contain both benign and malignant components. Sporadic solitary HRT that contain high-grade malignant pathology appear to be extremely rare [1]. We describe a case at our institution of a tumor that was characterized as a type-2 papillary RCC and atypical oncocytoma hybrid that mimicked a simple cyst on non-contrast computed tomography.
متن کاملNephrolithiasis and Osteomalacia associated with adefovir-induced Fanconi syndrome in a patient with hepatitis B
BACKGROUND An increasing number of case reports suggest that acquired renal Fanconi syndrome may be associated with prolonged use of adefovir against hepatitis B virus. Renal Fanconi syndrome is an uncommon disease, and its complication with nephrolithiasis is quite rare. Herein, we report a rare coexistence of nephrolithiasis and acquired renal Fanconi syndrome in a chronic hepatitis B-positiv...
متن کاملMetastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Masquerading as a Primary Ovarian Mass in a Post-Operative Case of Meningioma and Renal Cell Carcinoma
The clinical presentation of metastatic renal cell carcinoma to ovary is extremely rare as well as confusing due to its close resemblance to primary ovarian tumors, especially clear cell carcinoma. We present a case of metastatic renal cell carcinoma diagnosed in a 48-year-old female, who had renal cell carcinoma of the right kidney and right sphenoid wing meningioma of transitional type.
